An intentionally small treatment centre, run by people who've walked the walk themselves.
Bali Beginnings was founded by Howard, who's over 12 years sober from alcohol himself — a "grateful alcoholic", as he puts it (he's got it tattooed on his hand, in case you ever wondered how seriously he takes it). After his own journey through recovery, he had a fairly clear sense of what was missing in most addiction treatment. The centres that were big enough to be commercially viable were too big to actually know the people in them. The smaller ones often weren't properly clinical. And almost none of them stayed involved past the 28-day mark.
So when Howard set Bali Beginnings up, he built it the other way round. Up to eight clients at any one time. A multi-disciplinary clinical team big enough that no one falls through the gaps. Two years of structured aftercare baked in from day one — because honestly, the residential stay is the easy bit. The journey really starts the day a client goes home.
That's what Bali Beginnings has grown into. People come to us from the UK — and further afield — because the clinical work is genuinely serious, the setting supports recovery rather than reminding you of a ward, and the cost sits a long way below UK private residential rehab. We're not for everyone, and we'll say so plainly. But for the people we are right for, it tends to work.
"The best thing about getting sober is you get your feelings back."
— Howard, Founding Director
The programme itself was designed by Dr Terry Spokes — Oxford-trained Clinical Psychologist (BSc, DClinPsych Oxford), 15+ years heading NHS departments in the UK before he came to us. He built the clinical spine of the work using CBT, ACT and CFT, sitting alongside the 12-step program and a range of body-based and meditation-based therapies (yoga, breathwork, sound healing, acupuncture). Different people get value from different bits of it. The point isn't to push everyone through the same template.
What we don't do is treat addiction as a thing you fix in 28 days and then send people home. Recovery isn't really about putting the bottle or the substance down — that's the bit you can do in a residential centre. The harder bit is what comes after: understanding what the drink or the drug was actually doing for you, what you put in their place, how you handle the days when the old patterns try to creep back in. That's why our aftercare runs for two years, not 30 or 90 days.
We also believe in giving back. A portion of every admission goes to supporting addiction recovery initiatives in Indonesia, and we run free services for the local Bali community alongside the residential programme. None of that costs the client anything — but it matters to us, and we mention it here in case it matters to you too.
One-to-one sessions with qualified psychologists. We use CBT, ACT and Compassion-Focused Therapy — the specific approach gets matched to each client.
24-hour on-site medical care, including a safe, medically managed detox where it's needed.
Yoga, meditation, acupuncture, reiki, sound healing and breathwork, woven through the programme. Not everyone takes to all of them — that's fine.
Recovery coaches walk clients through the 12-step program, with access to local AA and NA meetings off-site.
We cap the centre at eight clients at any one time. It's how we keep the care actually personal, not just personalised on paper.
A team of clinical professionals, psychologists, doctors and recovery coaches, on hand 24/7 — most of them with personal recovery experience of their own.
Flights, VIP airport transfers, insurance, medical detox, treatment, meals, and 2-year aftercare. One price covers it. No surprise extras.
Two years of structured aftercare. Most rehabs stop at 30 or 90 days. For us, the months after a client goes home are the period that matters most.
Most clients self-fund, though some private medical policies contribute toward residential treatment. We'll talk you through the realistic options on the first call — no pressure either way.
A slice of every admission goes to addiction recovery work in Indonesia and the local Bali community. It's a small thing, but it matters.
