Recovery Begins Here

Private Rehab Abroad — Small Enough That We Actually Know Every Client

Bali Beginnings is a deliberately small treatment centre. A lot of the people we work with come from the UK, looking for somewhere completely away from whatever's been feeding the addiction at home. We never take more than eight clients at once. That's not a limitation — it's the whole point. It's the only way you genuinely get to know someone and do the work properly.

About Us

An Intentionally Small Treatment Centre

Bali Beginnings sits in Uluwatu, on the southern tip of Bali. Eight clients maximum, at any one time. We hold that line on purpose. It means nobody gets lost in the crowd, and it means we can be a bit choosy about who we take on. Everyone here has actually decided they want to be — and honestly, that's a large part of why the programme works.

Howard, who started the place, is over 12 years sober from alcohol himself — a "grateful alcoholic", as he puts it. He built Bali Beginnings as the rehab he wishes had existed when he was trying to stop drinking: small, clinically serious, in a setting that actually helps rather than reminding you of a hospital ward, and at a cost that comes in well below UK private residential rehab. A stay at the Priory or somewhere similar can run to eight or ten thousand pounds a week. We're a long way under that.

Dr Terry Spokes — an Oxford-trained clinical psychologist who spent years heading up NHS psychology departments before this — designed the programme. Day to day it's run by a team of psychologists, doctors and recovery coaches, plenty of whom have their own recovery behind them.

Conditions We Treat

What We Help People With

We treat a range of substance use disorders, often alongside co-occurring mental health conditions. The most common ones are below. If what you're dealing with isn't on this list, get in touch — chances are we can still help, and if we can't, we'll usually know someone who can.

Our Approach

How the Programme Actually Works

Recovery isn't really about stopping the drinking or drug use — that's the easy bit, in some ways. The harder bit is understanding the patterns underneath: what the drug or the drink was actually doing for you, and what you put in their place. That's where most of the work happens here.

  • Psychotherapy

One-to-one sessions with qualified psychologists. We use CBT, ACT and CFT — the specific approach gets matched to what each client actually needs.

  • Medical Care

24-hour on-site medical supervision, including a safe, medically managed detox where it's needed.

  • Other Therapies

Yoga, meditation, acupuncture, reiki, sound healing and breathwork. The clinical work is the spine of the program — but the rest of it matters too.

  • 12-Step

Recovery coaches work with clients through the 12-step program, including local AA and NA meetings off-site.

  • 2-Year Aftercare

Two years of structured aftercare. Honestly, in many ways the residential stay is the easy bit — the journey really starts when you leave us. The months after you go home are when most relapses happen, and that's the period we put the most effort into.

Client Stories

Some of the people we've worked with

Didn't think I'd actually take to the place, but I did. The team properly cared, the clinical side was serious, and somewhere in the second week something shifted in me. Best thing I've ever done.
James M. — Manchester, 2025
I was dead sceptical about going abroad for rehab. Im not now. The clinical team clearly know what they're doing, and being completely out of my usual surroundings made a far bigger difference than I'd expected.
Sarah T. — London, 2024
They looked after me like one of their own, and everything about how they work is five stars. I'll always be grateful — what they gave me was basically a second chance.
